If you are considering a folding trailer, you are probably asking yourself the question: can I tow a folding trailer with my regular car license (driver’s license B)? Good news: in most cases, you can. But there are a few things to watch out for.

In this article, we explain it clearly and simply.

The rules in brief

With a driver’s license B, you may:

• Driving a car with a maximum authorized mass (MTM) of 3,500 kg
• Towing a trailer (such as a folding trailer), as long as the combination of car + trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.
• In that case, the trailer (folding trailer) may have an empty weight + payload up to the maximum your car may tow (see registration certificate)

And when do you need BE or B+?

• If the combination is heavier than 3,500 kg but not more than 4,250 kg → you need a B+ driving license (code 96)
• Is the combination heavier than 4,250 kg? Then you need a driving license BE

But good news: Holtkamper folding trailers are well within the limit of the B license. Even with luggage, you stay well under the limit in most cases. No worries then!

One of the most frequently asked questions is, “Will a folding trailer fit the towing capacity of my car?” The good news: in many cases, the answer is yes. What exactly does “pulling power” mean?

Your car’s towing capacity indicates how much weight your car can safely and legally tow. This is also called the allowable towing weight and is broken down into:

• Braked towing weight: if the trailer tent is equipped with its own braking system (as with Holtkamper)
• Unbraked towing weight: without its own braking system – usually for smaller trailers

You can find your car’s maximum towing weight at:

• Your registration certificate (at RDW: “permitted maximum mass of trailer braked”)
• Or through websites like the RDW or Autoweek (based on license plate number)

What does a Holtkamper trailer tent actually weigh?

MOT inspection: not required for a trailer tent

APK inspection for a folding trailer:
A folding trailer does not need APK inspection because it is not a motor vehicle. The APK (General Periodic Inspection) is only mandatory for cars, motorcycles and heavier trailers above a certain weight.

Thus:
You do not need to have a Holtkamper trailer tent inspected annually or periodically.

When is a license plate yes required?

It depends on the maximum allowable weight (MTM) of the trailer tent:

• Permitted maximum weight (MTM of folding trailer) lower than 750 kg:
  ➤ No need for your own license plate
  ➤ You use a white license plate with the license plate of your car

• Permitted maximum weight (MTM of folding trailer) higher than 750 kg:
  ➤ The folding trailer has its own registration certificate and yellow license plate
  ➤ You must put it in your name with the RDW (when buying or transferring)

Technical inspection: wise in used trailer purchase.

Even though there is no mandatory inspection, it is wise to have your trailer tent checked periodically, especially at:

• Intensive use (many miles, frequent mounting and dismounting)
• Older or used models
• Longer trips (especially to mountainous areas)

For example, have your tires, brakes, lights, gas system and overrun brake checked. That way you can avoid surprises on the road.

It is recommended to replace the gas hose every 5 years. Check the date on the gas hose when purchasing a used trailer.
