Since Holtkamper was founded in 1928, innovation has been at the heart of the company. The Holtkamper Astro made its debut in 2006 and has become a favorite among campers who value simplicity, comfort, and ease of use. In 2025, the Astro returned as a completely redesigned hardtop folding trailer, developed to meet the needs of the modern camper.
While the original Astro was known for its practicality, the new generation combines that familiar ease of use with a modular design. You start with a compact base model and expand the folding trailer as your needs change.
Within the Holtkamper lineup, the Astro is the affordable entry-level model, positioned alongside the compact Nano and the more luxurious Aero and Kyte. How quickly can the Holtkamper Astro be set up?
When people think of a folding trailer, many still picture a complicated setup involving countless poles, guy lines, and a lot of physical effort. At Holtkamper, that’s a thing of the past. Thanks to smart innovations, well-thought-out designs, and a logical setup sequence, all Holtkamper folding trailers are fully ready for camping in about 15 minutes.
The Astro is the fastest model in the current Holtkamper lineup and is one of the quickest folding trailers to set up on the market. Thanks to its smart hardtop construction with a lever, its straightforward design, and the minimal number of steps required, the Astro can be easily set up by a single person.
Step-by-Step Setup Procedure
| 01 | Place the Astro in the desired location and make sure the folding trailer is level. Thanks to the braked AL-KO chassis, the jockey wheel, and the four extendable supports, the Astro can be set up quickly and stably. |
| 02 | Detach the ratchets, elastic straps, and zippers from the hardtop and open the hardtop. Then fully unfold the tent structure. Neatly secure the flaps around the car. |
| 03 | Go inside and tension both frame sections of the folding trailer by sliding them upward. This immediately gives the tent its final shape and stability. |
| 04 | If applicable, install any add-ons, such as the optional awning, side walls, or kitchen, when you use them. |

Comfort on board
Sleeping in the Astro: the same comfort you’re used to at home
A good night’s sleep is the difference between camping and enjoying a truly relaxing vacation. Measuring 210 × 155 centimeters, the bed is comparable to a spacious double bed at home. The fold-up slatted base with gas springs provides stable support, while the cold-foam mattress comfortably conforms to the body.
The mattress is also reversible and offers two different levels of firmness, so you can tailor your sleeping comfort to your personal preference.
A major advantage of the Astro is its blackout inner tent. It blocks out much of the daylight, allowing you to enjoy a longer night’s sleep even on bright summer evenings and early mornings. This makes the Astro comfortable not only for adults but also for families with children.
The ECO cotton used is a breathable and durable tent fabric that has been finished with an eco-friendly treatment. Are you traveling with your family? If so, the Astro can be expanded with an optional children’s tent, increasing the total capacity to a maximum of four people. There’s also a generous 1,000 liters of storage space under the bed.

One of the biggest advantages of the Holtkamper Astro is its modular design. You start with a complete basic folding trailer and then decide for yourself which add-ons suit your camping style. The modular design also affects the dimensions: the standard model measures 365 × 180 × 130 centimeters when folded, while the kitchen model increases in length to 425 × 180 × 130 centimeters. Stable on the road
The Astro’s AL-KO chassis
You want to be able to rely on your folding trailer not only at the campground, but also on the road. That’s why the Holtkamper Astro is equipped with a galvanized AL-KO chassis. AL-KO, short for Alois Kober GmbH, is a renowned German manufacturer and is considered one of the leading suppliers of chassis and undercarriages for premium caravans and trailers in Europe.
The Astro comes standard with a braked chassis featuring an overrun brake and an automatic reverse braking system. The overrun brake ensures that the folding trailer brakes automatically when the car slows down. The automatic reverse braking system prevents the brakes from locking up while reversing. Together with the standard shock absorbers, this contributes to a stable and comfortable driving experience.
With a curb weight of 425 kilograms, the Astro is one of the lighter models in the Holtkamper lineup. The maximum allowable weight is 750 kilograms, leaving approximately 325 kilograms available for luggage, camping gear, and other essentials.
Its compact size makes the folding trailer easy to handle while driving and easier to store than many larger trailers. Astro or Nano?
Both are compact hardtop folding trailers. The main difference is the level of flexibility. With the Astro, you decide which features to add—now or later. The Nano comes as a complete package for campers who want to immediately enjoy a compact and comfortable setup. The Astro can be expanded with a children’s tent for up to 2 people; no children’s tent is available for the Nano. The kitchen on the Astro is optional; the Nano does not have a kitchen.
Astro or Aero WindForce®?
The Aero WindForce® features the patented WindForce system, which automatically sets up the tent. The Astro is set up manually, but thanks to its smart design, it’s still ready for use in less than 15 minutes.
