Through desert assignments in the United Arab Emirates, Holtkamper gained much knowledge about tents that can withstand extreme heat and wind. In the process, Bert Holtkamp learned from nomadic peoples, which led to the Holtkamper Membrane tent system, later applied in tent trailers and as the basis for, among other things, the All Climate windows of Utopia XL tents. Also rediscovered techniques, such as cotton bleaching and making tents move with the wind, can still be seen in Holtkamper products.
